Year 11 - Salford Quays - Geography Fieldwork

During the week commencing 21st October 2024, out Year 11 Geographers were out and about in Salford Quays conducting their human geography fieldwork enquiry.

Prior to the trip students established an enquiry question, determined how they would collect data to gather evidence and conducted a risk assessment to ensure that the fieldwork was safe.

On the day they used the Metrolink to travel to Salford Quays, a sustainable form of transport and part of Greater Manchester’s integrated transport network. When they arrived in Salford Quays they collected evidence to answer their enquiry question: ‘Has the regeneration project at Salford Quays improved the local area?’

They travelled to 6 sites along a transect of Salford Quays and conducted an environmental quality survey at each site. This involved assessing the sites on a scale of 1 – 5 in different categories, including social, economic and environmental. If the project has been successful, we would expect higher scores in the regenerated areas.

The fieldwork was a huge success. Students conducted themselves well throughout the day and they gathered a wealth of evidence which they can now use to help them answer their enquiry question. Back in the classroom they will decide how best to present the data, analyse the data and then reach a conclusion based on the evidence. Finally, they will need to evaluate their geographical enquiry to determine how accurate, reliable and valid their conclusions are.

Well done to all Year 11 Geographers involved.
