On Thursday 7th March, we celebrated World Book Day at Newman RC College. Our students have lots to take part in and were really enthusiastic about reading for pleasure.
Every student received a book token in their form to spend at participating retailers.
Our year 7 and 8 students read a short story called 'The Sniper' throughout the day - a section at the start of each lesson. This promoted great conversation and real buzz about the story.
Furthermore, we hosted a second-hand book fair in the LRC. We sold over 150 titles, raising lots of money for charitable causes. The LRC was heaving full of eager readers. Alongside the fair, we had activities such as quizzes, a book review corner and students taking part in the National Book Token competition. Our Newman journalists were busy volunteers helping host the events.
Additionally, our teachers wore their favourite book on their lanyard for students to find. It encouraged lots of conversations about books.
Today, to extend the celebrations, we hosted a speaking competition. Students in KS3 were invited to participate and was judged by Ms Powell and Ms Zander. The theme was "Why you should read my favourite book". Their pitches were truly engaging and it will be difficult to determine a winner.
Winners for all competitions will be announced in the coming week.
