Our wonderful Debate team have recently taken part in the Debate Mate Urban Debate League (UDL) which is a national debating competition that runs throughout major cities in the UK. In our first round, we won 7 out of 8 debates which was a fantastic achievement. In our second round of the UDL, we won 6 of out 8 debates. We debated topics such as social media, the criminal justice system and the environment. All the scores from both rounds were added up and the leaderboard was published. Newman came 2nd in Manchester and 6th Nationally which is an outstanding achievement! This result means that Newman qualify again for the London finals which will take place in June.

We are looking forward to our next competition, the Debate Mate Cup which is a regional competition taking place in April where all the 20 schools involved in Manchester battle to be crowned the Debate Mate cup champions. We will be debating a hot topic on the UK’s future energy production and climate change.

We are all incredibly proud of all of students who take part in debate mate and wish them the best of luck in the Debate Mate cup and London finals! If anyone else is interested in joining our amazing team, please contact Mrs Parkes for more information. Everyone is welcome!
