Mr Walker
Assistant Headteacher - Mathematics

In maths, we aim to develop resilient and independent learners who are adept at problem solving. Pupils are  encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and we offer rewards and recognition for those that do this consistently. Where pupils require additional support we offer numeracy interventions, teacher led tuition, daily Homework Club and round the clock support through free access to online resources.  â€‹

In the classroom, teachers make effective use of research informed strategies to develop pupils as they follow a carefully crafted learning journey that establishes strong foundations before stretching and challenging understanding as their journey progresses. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils leave Newman having achieved their full potential through the studying of Functional Skills and GCSE qualifications and also wish pupils to understand the maths they will face in real life including managing tax, mortgages, budgeting and understanding good and bad debt.

“Give instruction to a wise person and they will become wiser, teach a just person and they will continue their learning”.

Proverbs 9:9

Mathematics is more than just numbers and equations; it is a powerful tool that can lead to exciting careers in many different areas. If you enjoy solving problems and thinking logically, mathematics could be the key to your future job.

Many people with math skills work in areas like technology, science, and finance. For example, mathematicians help build computer programmes, create video games, and develop new inventions. In the world of business, maths is used to manage money, predict future trends, and make important decisions. Even in medicine, maths helps doctors and scientists create better treatments and technologies to keep us healthy.

As the world changes and new technologies grow, people who are good at maths are in high demand. So, whether you dream of designing robots, helping solve mysteries, or making the world a better place, maths can help you get there.

Some examples of careers in Maths are:

  • Teacher.

  • Mathematician.

  • Software developer and computer programmer.

  • Research scientist

  • Economist.

  • Actuary.

  • Accountant.

  • Engineer.

A career in maths can be exciting and fun, and you’ll be using your skills to make a real difference in the world!
